Winter’s First Snowfall

Dawn had not even begun to grace the sky in Camden this morning when I was awoken by the unexpected sound of a plow. Looking out the window, I was greeted by a scene reminiscent of many winter mornings: snowflakes falling from the heavens above, beautifully flocked trees, and a good two inches of fresh powder covering the ground. The weather forecast last night was calling for only a coating of wintery precipitation, so it was quite the surprise to gaze outside at a snow-covered landscape, albeit a welcomed one.
A little while after sunrise, I headed out of the house and meandered down to Camden Harbor. It was quiet, not many people appeared to have stirred from their homes just yet. The snow continued to gently fall and as I reached the town wharf the sound of rushing water from Megunticook Falls filled the air. It seemed as though the falls were the only thing in the harbor with much vigor this morning. With the exception of a lone fisherman on the docks, who was slowly shoveling off his lobster boat, it was devoid of any activity.
I’m sure this snow will soon bid farewell as temperatures look like they are going to warm up later this week. For the moment, I will enjoy what is perhaps a small preview of what winter might bring us this year. And what a wonderful preview it is! I will leave you with the image I captured while wandering around the harbor on this snowy morning, looking forward to winter’s true arrival.
